Yorkie Verses Maltese
Maltese verses Yorkies....What are the differences ?
Many folks come to me wanting to know the differences in the Maltese and the Yorkies......
I will be as candid as I possibly can, as I know what a big commitment a new puppy can be, we have them for years and they are our babies. While both breeds are adorable, they are quite different in look and over all temperaments.
Remember to go back to the Origin of the Breed, no matter how hard breeders over the years have tried to change or better any breed. The Origin will forever be present in that breed. I have had 17 years now experience with both and will list as much as I can.
The Yorkies were originally bred in England and.......
The Yorkie was bred for the purpose of catching rats in mines. They were also used for hunting to borrow underground after badgers and foxes. The ancestors of the Yorkshire Terrier are the Waterside Terrier, a small Scottish breed with a long blue-gray coat ( via Google). With this being said , you will never get the "Ratter', completely out of the Yorkie. They were bred to kill, just like certain large breeds, is the bottom line. Breeders have tried to domesticate the breed over the years but you can never get the ratter fully out of the Yorkie. This is why I never recommend large numbers Yorkies, they will pack unexpectedly in numbers of 3 or more and harm the weakling if your not a home. And any breeders being honest will tell you this is a fact. My Yorkies here are very sweet and clever and not known for this behavior but I am mindful that it is in the breed by nature... but for this reason when I am away they are separated, just to be safe, especially with females in season, where bad behavior could be exhibited.
On the flip side, your never find a more loyal, spunky, little life long companion than the my lines of Yorkies, with their playful and curious little spirits. My lines originated from the Misty Blue and Desert lines which have been very sought after for Years. Known for one of a kind look, and personalities, with smushy little face, large expressive eyes, compact little bodies and easy to spoil rotten like 5 year old Children not Yorkies. I love them to pieces and have worked very hard to improve the look. My past clients come back for 2 , 3 and even 4 Yorkies and have been extremely happy.
The Maltese were originally bred in Malta.....
These dogs were bred entirely as companions and “comforters,” being especially favored by the ladies, who often carried them in their sleeves or held them in their laps when in their carriages “taking air.” The Maltese maintained his demand as a companion through the centuries ( via Google). With this being said, there in not an aggressive bone in the Little Maltese's Body. They have a very angelic look and spirit. They can play or be left alone in groups and never fear of one harming the other. For Breeders this is a very important difference, with Pet homes, not so much if just a couple of Pets. The word Comforter is so true, if I am ever not feeling well my Maltese will lay by my side for hours seeming to know to be still and calm, as very intuitive. They are a very calm, mellow, and gentle breed that still loves to play with the toys and each other, but do so with a very gentle approach. They are also EXTREMELY EASY TO POTTY TRAIN, honestly more so than Yorkies, they are an extremely clean little dog, and their haircoats NEVER get a doggy odor, that I LOVE!
On the flip side, many ask about the tear staining. With the Adorable Korean lines, I have not had this problem. They just do not stain like the American lines. They are Ice White and Simply Breath- Taking. Any Maltese may stain slightly with teething, but keep the face clean and it does not discolor badly at all. The Top Knots on the Maltese are done totally different than the Yorkie as well to keep any Discoloration away, I plan of doing a page on the Korea cut and tips on keeping the Maltese with the Korean appearance. There is also a powder that is very effective if ever needs to be used. Also My Maltese hardly every bark, nothing seems to bother or startle them. This is great for cat owners. A few of my Yorkies do bark at our Cat Sinatra, but most do not.
With a few facts above, you can apply some of the traits to your situation and see which little companion best fits what you are looking for.....
With either, you will never regret your choice. 5 of my clients have completely converted to the Maltese after having both....1 still prefers the Yorkie. So its all about what your looking for in your Perfect Match and it is my commitment to help you make that choice.
